SHOPPERS are fuming after being told to get a move on with their shopping or face getting their car clamped.

Alban Retail Park, off Winwick Road, has brought in new rules that will mean any motorists parking for more than three hours will have their car clamped.

The move will leave shoppers seriously out of pocket with a charge of £100 to have the clamp removed.

Clamping company Harcourt Ltd Clamping, based in Walkden, will be looking after the site and will be patrolling car parks.

The move has left shoppers angered because of the limit on the amount of time they can spend on the complex.

Customer Simon Blackburn said: “Another shopping centre that doesn’t make its buyers welcome – just what the retailers need in this recession.

“That’s 0/10 for planning, salesmanship and intelligence by the property managers.”

The retail park has shops including PC World, Currys, Carphone Warehouse, Mothercare and a First Choice Holiday Hypermarket.

It also has a Pizza Hut and KFC restaurant and some visitors believe that they could spend more than three hours on the site in one go, falling foul of the new rules.

On the warringtonguardian.co.uk forum readers have been voicing their opinions on the changes.

Phildamp said: “It’s a free car park so what are they clamping for?”

Many shoppers are worried about how well the timings can be managed as there is no ticket system to show the exact time that they arrive at the retail park.

Others believe the move was brought in because the site is used by rugby fans who then walk down to The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

But others think the charges will drive away more shoppers from using Warrington as many other retail parks including Riverside Retail Park and supermarkets like Tesco charge customers for taking too long with their shopping.
