BUDDING rocket scientists from Penketh High School have been celebrating their success at the STFC Daresbury Laboratory’s Lift-Off Rocket Challenge at Chester Racecourse.

More than 400 pupils, aged seven to 16, from 25 Cheshire schools took part in the challenge.

Pupils from Penketh High School won first prize in the afternoon’s ‘Payload Challenge’ for 11 to 16 years olds, by achieving the best average distance for transporting a raw hen’s egg in a water rocket without it breaking.

The youngsters also took part in hands-on activities such as building robots and taking part in a ‘Robogeddon’, as well as hearing a space talk from a UK space scientist.

Tony Buckley, head of science in society at STFC Daresbury Laboratory, said: “The event aimed to show young people how the principles of science and physics they learn in the classroom can be applied in a fun way.”
