A FIVE-year-old girl saved her dad’s life when he slipped into unconsciousness with diabetes.

Katie Green’s quick-thinking stopped her dad Gary from falling into a coma and now the North West Ambulance Service has honoured her with a special award.

“I am so proud of her. What she did and the way she acted was well above her years,” said Gary.

He had been unwell that day and became hypoglycaemic – a pathalogic state caused by an abnormally low amount of sugar in the blood.

Katie noticed her dad was not responding and realised he was not simply asleep.

She went to the kitchen and got a glass of water with sugar mixed in and tried to feed it to her dad before calling her auntie and grandma.

There was no answer at their houses so she tried her uncle’s mobile number.

Her uncle told Katie to go next door and get help, and it was then that the ambulance was called.

“She was absolutely brilliant. I am very proud of her,” said Gary, who is 37 and lives in Glazebrook.

Gary had never spoken to Katie about how to help him if he became ill.

“She must have seen it on the TV. It is the only place I can think of where she could have picked it up,” he said.

Paramedic Dave Berry presented Katie with a certificate and some ambulance souvenirs to commend her for being so brave and courageous.

“Katie kept calm throughout the time I was there, and undoubtedly, without Katie’s actions, her father’s condition could have been much worse,” he said.

“It is so nice to recognise a job well done by someone so young.”
