LABOUR has retained control of Warrington Borough Council – with the Conservatives almost wiped out in the all-out election.

The election took place on Thursday, with the results declared at Birchwood Community Hub today, Saturday.

Labour won 42 seats, Liberal Democrats 12, three independents and one Conservative.

Council leader Cllr Hans Mundry, Labour, who retained his Latchford East seat, said: “I think it’s been a really good victory for Labour.

“I think, in Warrington, I’m pretty certain it’s probably one of the biggest margins we’ve ever had here, so it’s a historical day for Warrington, a historical day for the Labour Party in Warrington.

“I’m really pleased that we’re moving forward.”

Labour’s Cllr Jean Flaherty, who retained her Fairfield and Howley seat, also shared her views.

She said: “It is just absolutely fantastic to be part of the biggest ever Labour win for Warrington, it’s just amazing.”

Cllr Nigel Balding, Conservative, lost his Birchwood seat.

He described the results as ‘disappointing’.

"I haven’t analysed all the figures yet, but I think we’re down to one Conservative councillor now, which is the same position as we were in, in 2020, so that is disappointing," he said.

Warrington Guardian:

“However, we’ve had three years in office, 10 Conservative councillors, I wasn’t expecting to be elected in 2021, so it was an absolute privilege to represent Birchwood for those three years.

“As a group, I think we’ve worked tremendously hard in Warrington and I think we have repaid the trust the electors gave us for those three years, they’ve made a different decision now, and I wish the new councillors all the best for the next four years.”

The council has 58 councillors representing 22 wards in the borough.

The next council elections in Warrington will take place in May 2028 and then May 2032.
