CHILDREN feel special, empowered, confident, and proud after taking part in a unique project in Warrington.

Samantha Poston founded PROTÉGÉ: A Project for Performers back in 2018.

The 32-year-old wanted to create a safe place for young performers to express themselves, to make friends, and to train.

The project consists of creating a musical theatre concept video over a three-day intensive process with various industry professionals.

Warrington Guardian:

This allows children to experience what its like to be both in front of and behind the camera and the microphone.

Over the three days, the performers work alongside choreographers, directors, vocal coaches, producers, photographers, videographers to create a video.

Rehearsals take place at AT Dance in Stockton Heath, a dance school where Sam is one of the partners and directors, with the project then shot at a separate location.

Samantha is currently editing the 15th project, with plans for the 16th one already in place.

Children aged between six and 21 can take part and no previous experience is required, just a passion for the arts and a willingness to learn and be part of a team.

Previous work includes the likes of Matilda the Musical covers, as well as The Sound of Music, Mamma Mia, and School of Rock.

The projects leave those involved empowered and ‘really special’ which was the case for Leilah Strong, 13.

Leilah said: “I love getting to experience the professional side of things. It’s very interesting seeing the videographers film and getting the chance to go to a recording studio, it makes me feel really special that I get these opportunities and that I’m being pushed to my best ability.”

The friendships created during the process is a highlight for many children.

Paige Chadwick, 16, said: “My favourite part about being in project is the time I get to spend with people who have become like a family to me we share the same love for musical theatre and performing and it’s what brings us together and also the experience it gives to young people wanting to get into performing.”

And of course getting to watch the finished product is very rewarding for the children.

Sienna Reading, 8, said: “I feel amazed that I got to be in the video because it looks like a real movie and I’m in it. I love showing my school teacher and my friends at school we watch it on the big screen.”

Emily Sherwen, 17, added: “Being able to watch the finished project and to be proud of not only you but everyone involved is such an amazing feeling. It’s something I can always go back to whether it’s about watching back memories or showing off our hard work.”

The next project will take place in August, with auditions being held in June.
