THE Mersey has burst its banks in Warrington causing flooding across a number of areas of town.
It comes after a number of flood warnings and alerts were issued for the Mersey Estuary today, Tuesday, due to a high tide forecast.
The Environment Agency warned that a number of areas in the town were at risk of flooding today, and that flooding of property was also expected.
It said areas at risk included parts of Chester Road and Arpley Road.
Other areas at risk include Fiddlers Ferry, Eastford Road, Arpley Bridge, Knutsford Road, Howley, Kingsway North and Westy.
As of this afternoon, the Mersey has burst its banks in a few areas of town.
Underneath Arpley Bridge, which connects Centre Park to the town centre, is currently flooded.
Wharf Street, the road next to Riverside Retail Park is flooded, as is Morley Common in Lower Walton.
The Mersey also appears to be very high along Chester Road.
The Environment Agency says its incident rooms are on standby and that it is closely monitoring the situation.
It is also liaising with emergency services and local authorities.
In the meantime, residents have been urged to avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.
They are also advised not to attempt to walk or drive through flood water.
