THE grand opening of a refreshments room in a park in Great Sankey has been deemed a huge success.

Friends of Tim Parry Park, a volunteer group, decided to open a refreshment room in Tim Parry Recreation Ground in Great Sankey to help raise the community’s spirits and improve the area.

The non-profit refreshment room has been supported by Great Sankey Parish Council and opened for the first time on Saturday, March 30.

“We had 100% positive feedback, with the added bonus of people volunteering just so we can open on a Sunday – which will be happening very soon,” said Karen Schofield, one of the volunteers who helped organise the grand opening.

All proceeds made by the project will be reinvested back into the park in the hopes of improving the space for the community, as well as bringing the people of Great Sankey together.

The grand opening started at 10am and ran until 4pm and included a visit from the Easter Bunny who gave Easter eggs out to children.

“It’s been heart-warming watching everyone come together,” said Karen.

“Teenagers were volunteering for the [refreshments room] rota and old friends coming together reminiscing about the good old days.”

The refreshments room offers tea, coffee and hot chocolate as well as crisps, chocolates and biscuits.

The group of ten volunteers now want to open the refreshments room every weekend as well as during school holidays and are hoping that more people will come and visit soon.

“We hope you can pop in one day as there’s now’t like a cuppa,” said Karen.

More information about the project can be found on their Facebook page, which you can also message to find out how to volunteer.
