IT 61 years this year since the Thelwall Viaduct was built.
An open day was held to mark the completion of the bridge with visitors making the trip from across Warrington to the Viaduct before traffic was allowed.
Most who parked up took the chance to gaze down at the Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey.
By the mid 1960s, the increased use of the car meant Warrington often ground to a halt.
So the solution was to add to the motorway network to allow drivers to bypass the town.
The M6 being one of those chief routes.
The first bridge was built in 1963 to carry the M6 over the Manchester Ship Canal and the Mersey.
A second bridge was only constructed in 1995 as the route became increasingly busy.
The longest span is at more than 300 feet.
