A NUMBER of communities in Warrington will have their bins collected today.

This comes amid a brief respite between ongoing bin strikes.

A third wave of bin strikes will commence on Wednesday, November 8, and will continue through until November 20.

The industrial action is part of a national dispute regarding pay and working conditions on behalf of members of the UNITE trade union.

However, Warrington Borough Council has called for the strike action to be called off due to the trade union nationally accepting a pay deal -  though the union has refused to pull the plug on the strikes.

A number of areas across the town will have household waste collected today, Tuesday, though other communities will miss out on bin collections until the strikes are over.

Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, a council spokesperson said: "We are hopeful that on Tuesday, November 7, we will be able to send bin crews out.

"Crews will focus on the collection of black and blue bins for those households who normally have their bins emptied on Tuesdays.

"If this applies to you, please leave your black and blue bins out.

"To be clear - if this is normally your week to have your blue bin emptied, please leave this out. If it is normally your week to have your black bin emptied, please leave this out.

"We appreciate and regret that many other households, who do not normally have their bins collected on Tuesdays, will not have their bins emptied on Tuesday, November 7.

"We understand that given the prolonged and unsettled period caused by the bin strikes, green and blue bins have remained unemptied for several weeks."

The areas that will have their black bin emptied are:

  • Culcheth
  • Croft
  • Burtonwood
  • Glazebrook
  • Locking Stumps
  • Winwick
  • Rixton

Blue bins will be emptied in the following areas:

  • Woolston
  • Bruche
  • Birchwood
  • Gorse Covert
  • Padgate
  • Poulton with Fearnhead

When asked whether a lack of bin collections would result in residents receiving council tax refunds, the council confirmed that this would not be happening.

A spokesperson explained that council tax is just that, a tax, and is not a service charge - therefore refunds would not be made possible.

Tips in Warrington have extended their opening hours, with residents able to dispose of their own rubbish at tips in Woolston, Stockton Heath, and Gatewarth.
