A HALLOWEEN superfan has transformed her house in Bewsey again this year into a spooky grotto filled with tricks and treats that are guaranteed to give visitors a fright.

Becky Pennycook has been obsessed with Halloween since she was a little girl and her mum was a white witch, part of the modern pagan Wicca tradition.

As a youngster, Becky used to decorate her mum’s house with pumpkins, ghosts and witches each October but now that she has her own house – on Reid Avenue in Bewsey – she loves to create a Halloween hot spot for trick or treaters.

It’s so scary that it even made some children cry last year.

The annual spooky showcase has fake bodies in bags, blood-soaked hands and heads peering out of jars.

In the garden, there are frightening clown masks and skeletons as well as spiders, cobwebs and fake body parts strewn across the grass.

The 36-year-old mum-of-two prepares for Halloween at the end of July, getting the decorations and props out of storage and shopping for more goodies to add to the collection.

She follows social media accounts in America, where Halloween is a huge holiday, so she can get ideas each year.

Becky said: “I’m totally obsessed with Halloween – I’d celebrate it all year round if I could.

“My garden has featured in the Warrington Guardian for the last couple of years so I feel like I need to step things up each Halloween so it’s better than last year.

“Each year, I buy and make more decorations and put everything out on October 1.

“I keep adding to it for the whole month!”

Putting up the decorations now takes about two days and this year’s main attraction is a flesh skeleton having his fortune told with a new body as the grim reaper’s victim.

Becky said: “I have more bats and bigger pumpkins and the garden is covered in bones and spiders’ webs.

“I’ve had nothing but complements from neighbours and passers-by and the children keep asking if there will be a ‘dip if you dare’ bucket again this year.

“That will be back with more bugs and a different texture – the kids will be expecting slime but I’ve gone with something even more spooky.

“I’ve added a skeleton and bloody bandages line the path with a grave digger and a man-eating spider.

“I’ve also got flashing strobe lights that add to the spooky Halloween effect.”

She added: “I always been a fan of Halloween, but I celebrate Samhain, which is a pagan festival.

“My mum used to be a white witch, which is like a Wicca and that’s probably where it all stems from.

“You can’t be devout until you’re 16 so since I became of age, I’ve started looking into things, and now I’ve got my own place, I’m able to practise more.”

Becky says most of the people in her community love her display, but it has also attracted the eye of the police on occasions.

She said: “We had the police knocking on the door one day looking for somebody.

“They said jokingly, “We’d like to talk about this murder scene – these dead bodies, what’s happened?”

Becky dresses up as a friendly witch on October 31 to welcome trick or treaters to the garden where they can choose a treat from a basket or find one in a ‘dip if you dare’ bucket filled with something suitably disgusting.

Becky said: “We have people visiting us from all over Warrington and they often drive past the house so they can see it lit up in the dark.

“I can’t wait to see what other people are doing this Halloween.

“I love it when they go totally over the top like me!”

She added: “It now takes about two days to get all the decorations out and I’m dreading the day it comes down because I hate Halloween being over and having to wait a whole year for the next one – I’ve already got ideas for next time!”
