PLANS to refurbish Culcheth's China Rose have finally been approved by Warrington Borough Council.

Proposals to significantly extend and expand the capacity of China Rose on Common Lane were initially blocked by the council in July for ‘not being in-keeping with the area.'

These sought permission for the demolition of the front porch, which would be replaced by a two-storey front extension.

Amended plans by applicant Red23 Property say the property was bought to ‘encourage economic growth within the village.'

The documents state: “The property has been left empty and now requires a high level of refurbishment before being able to welcome the general public again.

"The proposal will provide a new type of hospitality venue to Culcheth. This will provide the community [with] local dining opportunities.

“This is rather than having to travel further afield for a more ‘luxurious’ dining experience, thus adding to the economic growth of Culcheth and adding new employment opportunities.”

The regeneration of the China Rose Restaurant aims to modernise and enhance the existing property to create a high-end bar and restaurant with a bistro-style dining experience on the ground floor with a bar situated on the first floor.

A period of public consultation regarding the vacant building concluded at the end of September.

Local councillor Wendy Maisey OBE voiced her support for the new plans when they were submitted in August, writing: "As a borough councillor in the Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft ward, I’m very happy with the latest plans and hope that approval can be expedited within Warrington Borough Council planning now.

"It will be a great asset to the village, bringing employment and a big boost to the local economy."

Plans were approved by Warrington Borough Council on October 6.
