CULCHETH High School could be set for a brand new 3G artificial football pitch.

That's according to a proposal submitted to town hall planners at Warrington Borough Council.

Documents sent to Warrington Borough Council's planning department show that the high school is hoping to install a new artificial football pitch on-site.

The description of the plans states that - if approved - the new pitch would replace the current provision of astroturf carpet that is currently in place.

According to the council's planning portal, the proposal was submitted at the end of May, though planners only categorised the plans as 'valid' on Wednesday, July 5.

The current astroturf at the school is more than 19 years old, and the demand for sports facilities in the area is high, so says the secondary school.

One portion of the application's cover letter reads: "We work with all our local clubs in the first instance negotiating a fair distribution of the time of access to the astro pitch.

"This fair distribution and use of the site resources for sport will be continued when the 3G surface is installed.

"The likely scenario is that the full-size 3G pitch would attract mainly football use given this is what the playing pitch strategy has identified as the key need for the Culcheth site."

Culcheth High School goes on to explain that it engages with more than 30 football teams across the area, which - it says - highlights the demand for adequate facilities.

The application adds: "The 3G artificial grass pitch conversion going ahead would satisfy the changing school curriculum needs which at present are needed to be supported by the use of other 3G pitches within the borough and in some occasions having to use pitches at neighbouring boroughs."

It concludes: "The changing of the carpet means no loss of grass provision nor impact to the environment.

"Upgrading to a 3G surface makes strategic sense for the education of our students and commercial sense for CHS Hire, benefiting our local community immensely."

This planning application is under consideration by the planning department at Warrington Borough Council, with a decision due by Wednesday, August 30.
