MAJOR construction works have been proposed by Warrington and Vale Royal College this week.

Plans submitted include documents proposing the construction of a completely new building on the site.

The building would be constructed on land that is currently being procured by the college from Warrington Borough Council.

Documents suggest that the building would be used to house a 'Construction Skills Centre,' focusing on technical skills courses.

The building would be used as the centre of new workshops focusing on plumbing courses, as well as two new classrooms, as well as a staff office space, too.

According to the planning documents, the building's aim is to help the college to improve employability in the area, and also is a response to the Government's T-Level initiative.

Included in the construction of this building - if approved - will be solar panels on the roof of the skills centre, which will help to reduce the centre's carbon footprint.

The land being acquired by the college that is being eyed for the development is currently used as an overflow car park for Orford Neighbourhood Hub.

Some partially demolished buildings remain on the site, so the documents say, with plans being in place for the full demolition of any buildings in the area, ready for landscaping to take place.

It is planned for the new construction to be only one storey high and will be constructed using materials in keeping with the college's current structure.

Documents also suggest that plans will be in place to limit the effect this development would have on the surrounding areas.

There will also be an increase in the number of parking spaces on the site, going from a current total of 344 to a proposed 385 spaces.

Due to the nature of this development including major construction works, it is planned that entirely new drainage systems will be put in place to support the current system.

The college says in the documents: "A feasibility study conducted in July 2021 identified an additional college building was required in order to cope with the delivery of the modern T-level college curriculum and increased pupil numbers."

Warrington and Vale Royal College's planning application is currently under consideration by Warrington Borough Council's planning committee.
