CHESHIRE Police are warning Warrington residents to beware of burglars as the number of break-ins is expected to rocket.

Police say that several areas are anticipated to see a rise in burglaries as the festive season approaches.

The police are urging people to follow simple steps to ensure the security of homes across the town.

Sergeant Mark Spaven said: "During this time of year we do see several burglaries and we are doing all we can to crack down on those intent on damaging our communities and bring them to justice.

"This is why you will see stepped-up patrols in your community and I would urge anyone who may have concerns to speak to an officer.

Sgt. Spaven added: "But while we do our part, I would urge residents to also do theirs by ensuring that their homes are secure.

"From checking that all windows and doors are locked, to looking out for neighbours."

Advice issued by Cheshire Police includes:

  • Make sure that all windows are closed and locked, even when you are at home or in the garden.
  • Use the security measures on modern windows, which allow them to let some air in but still be locked.
  • All external doors should be always secured, even when you are at home.
  • Keep all valuables out of sight and ensure that large amounts of cash are never kept in the home.
  • Always use a chain if you are unsure of the identity of visitors to your home when answering the door – or similar
  • It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on your neighbourhood and report any suspicious activity to the police.

Sgt. Spaven continued: "I would urge anyone who sees something that doesn’t look quite right in their community to contact us and we will do the rest.

“Any information, no matter how small, will assist us in catching those responsible and bringing them to justice."
