RESIDENTS in Culcheth remain plagued by swarms of flies in the area that stretches as far as Lowton, some claim.

Flies have always resurfaced in the rural parts of Culcheth each summer, but residents claim that this is the worst year yet.

Even moving into autumn, some locals say that they are catching upwards of 50 flies in their homes every couple of days.

In order to get authorities to investigate and take action, residents have coordinated among themselves to create a survey of households that are being affected by the two-winged terrors.

All in all, more than 700 households responded to the survey, with almost all respondents claiming that they are bothered by flies in the area each and every day.

Now, residents have come forward to explain how the swarms of insects are affecting them in their homes.

Lisa Cleworth said: "There have been loads in the Cherry Tree, it puts customers off and we've had loads of complaints."

Emma Horton added: "I moved to the area last year and cannot believe the number of flies."

A number of residents believe that the waste disposal site at Diggle Green Farm may have something to do with the large number of flies.

Responding to the claims, the farm said: "We are aware of the allegation.

"As a responsible operator, we take our environmental obligations seriously and we continue to work closely with both the Environment Agency and Local Environmental Health."

One resident, Many Billington, said: "The Environment Agency has been monitoring it for years, but nothing gets done."

Lesley Yates lives outside of Culcheth, and she added: "We get them on the Leigh/Lowton border coming in from Culcheth."

Meanwhile, Andy Fogg simply said: "We can't have the windows open."

The Environment Agency said that it is working closely with Warrington Borough Council to investigate the issues raised by residents.

A spokesperson from Warrington Borough Council told the Warrington Guardian: "We have received complaints from residents about flies in the Culcheth area and we are currently investigating to see if there is a specific source and what actions could be taken.

“As part of the investigation, we are working alongside the Environment Agency to ensure a joined-up approach.”
