A 70-YEAR-OLD woman was left shocked and amused after seeing her smart meter was displaying more than £61k for her daily energy usage.

Pauline Eaton had the device fitted in her bungalow yesterday morning, Wednesday.

A gas man showed her how to use the device, which is a self-reading gas and electricity meter, and went through the different stages – as well as leaving behind leaflets and information.

The meter displays how much energy you are using per day in pounds and pence.

The man explained to Pauline, of Howley, that it may take the meter a couple of hours to register her gas usage.

Throughout the day, Pauline was cold so decided to use the central heating and later on in the day she made her tea – using the gas.

When she glanced at the meter in the evening, it displayed a daily energy usage cost of £61,803.85.

Pauline said: “I know gas is going up – but I didn’t think by this much!

“At the moment I am finding this so funny.

“I just thought it would make some people laugh as much as me.”

Pauline said has not phoned SSE yet to report this as she knows it is a mistake.

But she will be contacting them next week if the reading doesn’t changed.
