LOOKING back over the year so far, there have been some outstanding success stories.

It is going to make life very difficult for the judges when they decide on the winners of the Warrington Sports Personality of 2007 award winners later this year.

But to be in with a chance of winning, the contenders have to be nominated. So readers may be interested to learn that nominations can now be put forward for the 10 categories via our website www.warringtonguardian.co.uk.

On the website there are details of the categories, prizes, competition rules and the history of past winners and pictures.

Warrington Sports Personality of 2007, sponsored by World of Beds and organised by Warrington Guardian, is starting the search for sporting achievers a little earlier this year to enable the organising team more time to kick everything into gear.

Early nominations would be a help but don't worry, if you're not yet on the worldwide web we will give full nomination details in the paper in November.

The junior presentation ceremony will take place at Warrington Wolves' Halliwell Jones Stadium on January 9, 2008, while the seniors' awards dinner will be at the same venue on February 1, 2008.

The Warrington Sports Personality of the Year event has really grown in size and stature since the first one at the Parr Hall in 1993.

I can still remember that event like it was yesterday (yes, I've played my part in organising them all), with Eddie Hemmings acting as host and Warrington comedian Jimmy Bright providing the laughs (some of them bluer than was expected!) Everyone believed Jonathan Davies, Warrington's Welsh rugby league superstar and now BBC expert summariser, to walk away with the main award and there were some shocked faces in the room when he didn't.

Warrington Athletics Club's Andy Green received the honour for his marathon marvels, or, should I say, his wife did. Andy had been called away on running duty and, in any case, did not himself hold high expectations of winning due to Davies' involvement.

I think the fact that Davies did not win gave every sportsman and woman in the town a belief in the event and that they could be potential winners next time. As a result, SPOTY (Sports Personality Of The Year) blossomed and is still flourishing.

* Liverpool Reserves' first home game at The Halliwell Jones is getting closer and it will be interesting to see the support for the move from Warrington townsfolk.

To the benefit of neutral football followers, there is no doubt a very high standard of football is going to be coming to the town considering the talent in the Reds' squad - much of it imported from overseas.

No doubt Liverpool fans in the town will enjoy getting behind Gary Ablett's side but fans of Manchester United, Manchester City and Everton that also abound in the town will probably stay away.

Sunderland at home on Tuesday will be a good game to gauge the interest because there will be little or no travelling support.
