A MAN is being held in custody after being arrested in the early hours of this morning over an alleged sexual assault.

The suspect was arrested shortly before 3.45am today in connection with an alleged case of sexual touching on a woman on Academy Way.

Elsewhere, other overnight arrests on a busy night for officers in Warrington included:

  •  At 7.21pm, staff and members of the public gave chase to an alleged meat thief from the Co-op on Warrington Road.
  • At 9.32pm, a man in the Poulton-with-Fearnhead area was arrested for an allegation of drunk and disorderly.
  • At 9.52pm, a man was arrested at ASDA, on Cockhedge Shopping Park over allegations of theft and threatening behaviour. It is alleged that the suspect stole from the shop and then threatened staff when detained.
  • At 10.41pm, a man was arrested at Warrington Hospital over an allegation of controlling and coercive behaviour against his partner.
  • At 11.45pm, a woman was arrested at Warrington Hospital after an allegation of drunk and disorderly. She was taken there following a concern for her safety, but once there it is alleged that she became abusive.
  • At 1.23am a woman driver on Rush Green Road, Lymm was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a breath test and over a further allegation of driving with no insurance.
  • At 2am a man driver on Mersey Street was arrested over an allegation of drink driving and also taking the motor vehicle without consent.
  • At 3.15am, a man was arrested in connection with an alleged assault on Academy Way. This resulted in a flurry of activity which ended up with two women arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly when they allegedly interfered with the initial arrest.
