HS2 could force the closure of a key road – but parish councillors are vowing to voice their opposition 'right to the bitter end'.

Fresh fears have been raised over the impact of the route, with the latest proposals confirming the route will close Wigshaw Lane at the junction with Glaziers Lane, between Croft and Culcheth.

If it goes ahead, it would see the HS2 Golborne link cross Wigshaw Lane, however, no new bridge is being proposed.

The road from Croft would turn and follow a new Glaziers Lane, along one side of the route to Warrington Road.

And the road from Culcheth will be redirected along the other side before also joining Warrington Road.

The Conservatives say people travelling from Culcheth to Croft will need to go up the new road and join Warrington Road, before crossing Warrington Road on a new bridge and then coming back down Glaziers Lane to rejoin Wigshaw Lane.

Fears have been raised over the route making it 'much more difficult' to travel between Culcheth and Croft by road and 'practically impossible' on foot.

The Conservative parish councillors in Culcheth and Croft are ‘strongly opposed’ to the plans.

They believe it would bring ‘significant inconvenience and hardship’ to residents.

Keith Bland, Conservative parish councillor on Croft and Culcheth & Glazebury parish councils, added: "You can be assured that we will continue to oppose this right to the bitter end."

Residents are being encouraged to respond to the consultation when it starts in September, along with providing their views to parish and borough councillors, as well as Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
