THE Royal Mail’s distribution centre at Winwick Quay is set to close ahead of a new parcel hub opening at Omega.

A new 346,000sq ft base for the postal service will open at Omega in October, it was announced last week.

And the Royal Mail has now confirmed that its existing North West Distribution Centre on Mill Lane will shut as part of the scheme.

However, the existing Omega mail processing site on Orion Boulevard will remain.

The major investment will see a new parcel ‘super hub’ created for the Royal Mail around four miles away from the Winwick Quay branch.

Process operations director Simon Barker said: “The north west is a key area for our UK parcels operation.

“The new site will enable us to meet the growing demand for the next-day delivery of online shopping.

“We want to be in the best position to respond to the anticipated continued growth in the UK parcels industry and to continue to improve working conditions for our people.”

Any move will be subject to consultations between the Royal Mail, unions and staff.

Mr Barker added: “We have just started to talk to our people in our sites in the Warrington area about this, and they will have the chance to feed in their views before any changes are made.”
