OVER the next week we will be sharing the inspiring stories of our winners from the Warrington Guardian Schools Awards 2018.

A new category for 2018, our Junior Community Champions category was launched to recognise pupils who go to great lengths to support the town they live in.

The first recipients of this award know the true meaning of teamwork.
After learning that Warrington and Halton Hospitals Charity was raising funds for a new outdoor play area for the children’s ward, Ruben and

Elena Evans-Guillan, pictured left, embarked on a fundraising mission by setting themselves a target of running 100km.

Not an easy task for most, but when you’re seven-year-old twins and living with ADHD it is even more challenging.

Ruben and Elena originally took up running last year as a way to help combat their attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

So far the pair have completed a number of sponsored runs including the 5km Manchester British Legion Poppy Run and the Grim Up North Slaithwaite Run.

The twins, from Padgate, are more than halfway through their target and having already raised more than £1,000, their unwavering commitment and dedication in all weather conditions is admirable.

Their proud parents watched on in delight as Ruben and Elena were crowned Community Champions, sponsored by Warrington Disability Partnership.

Dad Mark Evans said: “It definitely hasn’t sunk in that they have won.
“We started in October and got it all sorted with the hospital in December.

“More and more runs have cropped up over the year so we’ll end up doing about 120km in total by the end.

“The twins have been absolutely unbelievable, it was a long winter and we were out every Saturday and Sunday morning up and down the Pennines and Snowdonia.

“They haven’t complained once, I’m just so proud of them both.”
Mark, who is running the 100km alongside Ruben and Elena, added:

“The new play area will make a massive difference to children who are unfortunately in the hospital.

“I’m a big believer in giving young kids confidence and opportunities, and perhaps more importantly making them aware that they are helping other people.”
