A NEW vegan cafe has opened in Padgate serving plant powered versions of the likes of all day breakfast, roast dinner, sausage rolls, sandwiches, burgers and cakes.

Lynda Price makes the animal product-free food fresh daily and the cakes and dishes regularly change.

The Marsh House Lane restaurant is called The Green Room. It used to be called the Vegan Venue but under different management..

Lynda became vegan about five and a half years ago to help with her pregnancy when she was overweight.

After she gave birth to her son Jonah she kept the diet up, exercised more and lost nine stone, going from a size 22 to 10.

The 45-year-old said: “My energy levels started to soar. As soon as you start putting the right foods inside your body it’s unbelievable what the power of nutrition can do.

“It’s got to the point where I’ve started running six miles. I used to get out of breath climbing the stairs and had pain in my knees and that’s all gone.

“I was constantly trying different diets throughout my life until I became vegan.

“Now I don’t need to worry at all. I eat what I like when I like. My weight and energy levels have stabilised so it must be good for me.

“I also quit watching TV and in that time I taught myself a hobby – a skill – so while everyone else is on the sofa I’m teaching myself how to make new things like vegan ‘cheese’.”

The Orford resident has been cooking for her four kids for 22 years. She also often cooks for her three grandchildren and parents but this is the first time she has opened a restaurant.

Lynda, whose 11-year-old daughter Lily is also a vegan, added: “It’s multiple diets and multiple ages I’ve got to cater for at home so I’m pretty used to it. I’ve had plenty of practice.

“I get a lot of regulars. Some of them have been vegan for more than 30 years so for them to come in here and say what I’m doing is excellent is quite something.

“Vegans particularly tend to travel around and check out other restaurants. It sometimes hard to source our food. It’s nice to eat out where you know that everything is suitable on the menu. As well as vegans, people of all diets have visited out of curiosity. We’ve also had quite a few people come who have allergies.

“I’ve got a regular now who has an allergy to eggs as he knows it’s safe to eat here.”

The Green Room is also available for private functions and has already become a venue for vegan and vegetarian groups and animal welfare groups.
