IN the past week the Co-op bank left Warrington’s high street.
The bank was situated in the Old Fish Market and closed as part of cost savings by the company.
The move got us thinking here at Yester Years about the other famous Co-operative which used to be on Warrington’s high street.
This picture from the 1970s, left, shows the old Co-op supermarket and department store which was based over three storeys of a building on the corner of Sankey Street.
The building has largely been empty since TJ Hughes vacated the building in 2011.
But part of it is now a Polish supermarket.
The only unit still open now from those days in the 1970s is the Natwest bank.
Former high street favourites Woolworth’s and Etam were situated further down Sankey Street towards Market Gate with White Sports based on the left, before it later moved into Warrington Market.
