A LARGE fire was tackled by firefighters in the town centre on Friday night.

Crews from Penketh, Lymm, Birchwood and Widnes were called to Bridge Street following reports that a blaze had broken out at the Peri Peri Chicken takeaway.

Four engines were on the scene as firefighters brought the flames under control.

The area was cordoned off by police and bars in the nearby area were closed as a precaution.

Warrington Guardian reader James Sanders sent in the above video footage after witnessing the incident unfold. 

It is believed no-one was injured in the fire.

Firefighters were called just before 9.10pm to the incident and used four wearing breathing apparatus, used two hose reel jets, two main jets, a covering jet and a large fan to extinguish the fire. 

They were there for four hours and an investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.

Shawarma X Press, next door to Peri Peri Chicken takeway announced just before 10.25pm that they would be "closed until further notice" on Facebook.

They explained that the fire that spread into their shop - but they added that nobody was harmed.

It said: "Dear Customers,

"It is to our regret to announce that Shawarma X Press will be closed until further notice, due to an unexpected fire from next door spreading to Shawarma X Press.

"Fortunately, everyone managed to evacuate the building in time with no one being harmed.

"However, customers who put their order through after 8pm, and did not receive their order, are advised to retain proof of purchase for any refunds in due course.

"Please bear with us during this difficult time, and accept our apologies for any delay in our responses to your queries.

"Kind regards, Shawarma X Press."
