A TASK group has been set up with the aim of bringing the 2021 Rugby League World Cup to Warrington.

The town had previously expressed an interest in hosting men's, women's and wheelchair games when rugby league's premier competition returns to England in three years' time.

Now a task group of the town's business, culture and sport leaders has been formed in order to begin working on a bid to host the tournament.

Paul Taylor, managing director of Taylor Business Park in Risley, will chair the group.

He said: "Our initial meeting have made clear that group members bring the ideal blend of enthusiasm and expertise for the bid.

"The Rugby League World Cup isn't just for rugby fans - it's also about the legacy these tournaments bring, and is a great platform to bring Warrington's communities together.

"Being a host for the tournament would be a huge boost for the town, and the timing is perfect as the Time Square regeneration scheme will be completed by then as well."

The town memorably hosted the Samoan national team during the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, with the Halliwell Jones Stadium staging the Pacific Islanders' games against New Zealand and Fiji.

Warrington Wolves chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick and vice chairman Steven Broomhead, Warrington Borough Council's chief executive, have also been appointed to the task group.

Mr Fitzpatrick said: "I'm sure many Warringtonians remember the enthusiasm and infectious energy the Samoan national team brought when we hosted them in 2013, not to mention the memorable games that took place at the Halliwell Jones Stadium - perhaps most notably the epic clash between New Zealand and Samoa.

"We look forward to bidding again to create more sporting memories for Warrington in 2021."

Also a part of the board will be Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation director Neil Kelly, Livewire and Culture Warrington managing director Emma Hutchinson, Warrington & Co managing director Steve Park, Warrington Disability Partnership chief executive Dave Thompson and Marketing Cheshire tourism director Rachel McQueen.
