A COUNCIL worker was shocked to discover broken gravestones when he turned up for work at St Elphin's Church on Friday.

Glyn Jones shared this video on social media, capturing what he believed to be the work of mindless vandals.

Many members of the public voiced their disgust and heartache at the sight at the parish church.

But while the Rector of Warrington Revd Canon Paul Wilson thanked members of the public for their concern, he confirmed that this wasn't the work of vandals.

He said: "Warrington Borough Council (who has had the responsibility for maintaining the grounds of Warrington Parish Church since 1960) have removed these damaged stones from various areas around the church which had become broken over many decades due to vehicles (particularly funeral cars) driving over them to access the church during services.

"They had become a dangerous trip hazard and regularly pooled water after heavy rain.

"They have filled in the areas temporarily with ‘crusher run’ until a more permanent long-term solution can be agreed.

"The damaged stones have been placed here temporarily as they must remain within the churchyard grounds.

"Thank you again everyone."
