A DEDICATED volunteer has been recognised for his tireless service to the Winwick community and 20-year commitment to scouting in the town.

Alan Barnett was honoured by chief scout Bear Grylls, who hosts a survival TV series on Channel 4, for always going the extra mile to help Warrington West District Scouts

Rob Patheyjohns said: “Alan is a popular and well known member of the Winwick community.

“He has been an active member of the Warrington Scouts Active Support Unit for more than 20 years.

“Over the years Alan has helped out with hundreds of events and activities held by Warrington West District Scouts.

“He is always cheerful and always helpful.”

Val Thomason, deputy county scout commissioner for Cheshire, presented Alan with his award.

The Scout Association offers everyday adventure and activity to half a million young people across the UK.

Scouting is open to all young people aged six to 25 of every faith and background. There are also plenty of opportunities for adults to become involved as leaders, assistants or administrators.

Cheshire is one of the largest scout counties in the UK with a total membership of more than 11,000 people.

Warrington West District Scouts covers Penketh, Great Sankey, Westbrook, Orford, Stockton Heath, Burtonwood, Lingley Green, Kingswood, Callands, Old Hall, Chapelford, Bewsey, Howley, Dallam, Walton, Appleton, Stretton and Latchford.

In 2017, it was noted that there were 1,327 members.
