POLLUTED land on Liverpool Road in Sankey Bridges will be cleaned up.

Warrington Borough Council has submitted a planning application to remove contaminated soils in the front and rear gardens of 1 to 12 Roughley Avenue and 1 to 14 Broadhurst Avenue.

The work will also be carried out on the public open space to the rear of the properties.

The soil contains arsenic, lead and mercury.

The clean-up will cost around £1.5m. The pollution comes from soap and ash waste that was deposited in Sankey Brook during the 19th century. It was discovered in autumn 2004.
