A spokesman for Cheshire Constabulary released the following statement yesterday: "Police were called to an address in Edgewater Place on Tuesday following the discovery of what is thought to be an unexploded artillery shell on a building site.

"Officers attended the scene and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was notified of the discovery.

"EOD subsequently attended the address, but at this time have been unable to carry out a controlled detonation due to the hours of darkness.

"This is due to take place on Wednesday morning and, in the meantime, a cordon is in place around the site.

"As a precaution, a small number of nearby houses have been evacuated and alternative accommodation is being arranged."
