THE King's Head is set to open its new extension, built in place of the infamous 'shed' that had to be torn down after it was built without planning permission.

Affectionately known as the 'shed' by regulars of the town centre pub, the UPVC conservatory was added to the grade two-listed building without planning consent from Warrington Borough Council.

Three years on from the planning battle - which saw punters start a Save Our Shed Campaign and was featured in a Channel 4 documentary - a new extension agreed by the King's Head's owners and the council is set to open as the KH Bar in the coming weeks.

Landlord Andrew Fannon said: "I'm happier with this extension than the old shed and I think it will be a real benefit to the pub.

"I feel that we've saved the character of the pub, but the new extension has added an extra dimension to the King's Head to bring it into the modern age and attract a younger clientele.

"We always wanted to keep the pub traditional while morphing into a more modern room at the back.

"The King's Head will still be the King's Head but this extension will be a bit more upmarket."

Andrew, who took charge of the pub five years ago, is also hoping to create an outdoor seated 'cafe area' on Winwick Street.

He added: "We're in talks with the council to make a cafe area outside the pub so that when people get off the train they get a better view of Warrington than just a car park.

"The key thing is that we've saved this once derelict pub.

"It was on the verge of being closed but because of the support we've had from everyone we've been able to reinvest in the pub."
