EXPLODING marquees and the death of a princess haven't hindered Westy Carnival, which this weekend celebrates it's 10th anniversary.

It has had its fair share of set backs, including being moved off Westy Park in 2002 amid the fear of a methane gas build up in the marquees, but the carnival will once again take place this Sunday.

The first carnival, which was then a fun day, was held on the day Princess Diana died.

The idea behind the carnival first cropped up around 14 years ago as a way to promote the community.

Clr Steve Wright said (LD Latchford): "There used to be a carnival in the area we believe, which had fallen away and we wanted to reclaim that to mark the work that has been done in Westy."

Ten years on and the event is still evolving, new this year will be a car boot sale.

The future of Westy Park will also be up for discussion as Westy groups carry out consultations with the public about what to do with the park.

But traditionalists can also enjoy the usual displays by Zirconia Morris Dance Troupe and Shooting Stars Dance and Drama Group. They are also hoping to have fairground attractions on the day.

The fun starts at 11am at Westy Park this Sunday.

If you would like to volunteer to help out on the day or would like to know more about pitches at the car boot contact Cllr Wright on 658171.
