ALDER Root Golf Club waited 25 years for a hole-in-one in the women’s section – then two came along at once!

When the club hosted their Diamond Challenge competition, one of their major annual events, those in attendance were stunned when 69-year-old June Dowd’s tee shot on the 10th hole went straight in.

Among those watching the former Alder Root lady captain’s piece of history was Maggie Hunter, who was in the next playing group and had celebrated her 65th birthday the day before the competition.

Seemingly inspired by what she had seen, Winwick resident Hunter pulled a 7-wood from her bag and watched in amazement as her tee shot also found the hole.

“There had never been a ladies hole-in-one at the club before, then two came along within five minutes of each other!” said Gill Chruszcz, the current lady captain at Alder Root.

“Someone worked out the odds of it happening as being around 25 million to one!

“I highly doubt I’ll see something like that in my lifetime. I doubt any of us will.”

Both women are members of the Winwick club, with Hunter a relative novice having only played for the first time three years ago.

Their feat was achieved on a 150-yard par-three hole, known around the club as “Bunker Hell.”

“It’s not a particularly easy hole, far from it,” Chruszcz said.

“It’s guarded by two big bunkers right in front of the green so it can be a pretty difficult one.

“Most of us end up in one of the bunkers, so even landing it on the green is no mean feat.

“It was certainly an incredible atmosphere in the clubhouse afterwards.”
