A HIDDEN corner of Grappenhall renowned for its peace and tranquility has been awarded a Green Flag for the first time.

Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden, on Witherwin Avenue, was among a record-breaking 1,797 parks and green spaces in the UK to be given the award this year, marking it as one of the very best in the world.

The flag is a mark of quality for a park or green space.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Graham Richardson, manager of the garden said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the first time.

‘The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter.

“We welcome visitors to the site and are open (with free admission) every day, except Monday.

“Please check the website or visit our Facebook for opening times.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

“Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly.

“The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.”
