A CAMPAIGN has been set up to help raise money for equipment for a pair of twins who suffer from cerebral palsy and a debilitating neurological condition.

Mia and Lucy Moran were diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age after being born nine weeks prematurely, but around a month ago doctors also discovered the five-year-olds had Rett syndrome - which causes severe physical and learning difficulties.

Now a fundraising campaign hopes to raise £15,000 for equipment for the Fox Wood School pupils.

Mum Emma, from Woolston, said: "We found out early on that Mia and Lucy had cerebral palsy, but we found out about a month ago that they also have Rett syndrome which explains why they haven't been developing as much as they should have done.

"I know other children with cerebral palsy and in the back of my mind I was wondering why Mia and Lucy weren't developing like they were.

"With cerebral palsy you don't go backwards and you steadily progress, but for example when Mia was younger she could talk and unfortunately she's lost that ability now.

"It came as a complete shock to be honest and we feel as if we've been very unlucky, but the girls and their smiles are amazing."

The family will be forced to move out of their Hillock Lane home for up to three or four months at the end of the July when it is adapted for the girls, who also require regular physiotherapy.

Kind-hearted residents have already given £2,000 through charity Tree of Hope.

Emma added: "Unfortunately the costs are just crazy.

"We're in the process of getting the house adapted and will have to move out for up to 16 weeks while the house is ripped apart.

"Basically we're just trying to raise money for equipment and for physiotherapy to give them a good quality of life, because unfortunately the NHS can't give us everything we need.

"Lucy needs a specialist car seat and even for that you're looking at £2,000, just so that we can go out as a family in the car.

"It's something we've been dealt with but the twins are amazing and we'll continue to do our best for them and give them the quality of life that they deserve."
