A FATHER and his seven-day-old son had a near miss after vandals threw objects down from a bridge onto oncoming cars on Cromwell Avenue.

Several cars were damaged while travelling on the road following the reckless behaviour last Thursday night.

Police officers patrolled the area overnight and a dispersal order was put in place for Westbrook, Old Hall and Chapelford, including on the bridges in the area.

Simon Jones, 28, was heading to Westbrook at around 8.30pm on Thursday.

His son Harrison, aged just seven days old at the time, was also in the Golf car when the vehicle was struck.

However, despite some damage, the pair had a somewhat lucky escape, with the motorist in front seeing an object smash into their windscreen.

Mr Jones, from Great Sankey, said: "It was around 8.30pm when I was driving past the concrete bridge, which is further down from the red one, and suddenly logs hit my wing mirror and roof.

"It was just me and my son Harrison in the car.

"A log landed over where he was sitting. He was screaming.

"If it came through his side window, the glass could have shattered all over him.

"The trees and bushes near the bridge had been trimmed so that's where they got the logs from.

"There was a van at the front, then an Audi and then my car. As we all went past the bridge they pelted the cars with the logs.

"The logs went through the Audi's windscreen. I am not too sure what damage there was to the van.

"When the logs hit my car it sounded like someone crashed into me.

"After it, we turned back and could see about five youngsters there – they shouted at us and then started launching more logs and bottles.

"They were aged about 14 to 15 I think.

"This has not happened to me before but something similar has happened to someone that I know."

Despite the police's efforts to cut out anti-social behaviour, Mr Jones believes parents have a crucial role to play.

He added: "It is down to parents really – there is only so much the police can do.

"Parents need to know what their kids are up to."
