RESIDENTS are being urged to 'take some account' to ensure Appleton does not become a 'concrete jungle' due to the 'decimation' of grass verges.

Cllr Judith Wheeler (LD – Appleton) is calling on the public to protect verges outside their properties in the area.

She said: "The decimation of grass verges has long been a pet hate of mine.

"I know many residents and visitors continually take issue with the following but I know many will support me.

"The recent wet weather has reduced some of our grass verges to mud baths as residents continually park on the verges outside their properties.

"I know on some roads there is no room to park other than on grass verges but – in many instances – the properties do have substantial driveways which can be used.

"On some roads, such as Lyons Lane and Delphfields Road, where significant building work has taken place, lorries and vans make the situation even worse.

"Grass verges have an important role to play in making an area attractive and green.

"Without them we are on our way to becoming a concrete jungle.

"Grass verges are in the ownership of the council and I feel that residents do have to take some account that they are not theirs to spoil."

The council has also commented on the matter.

A spokesman said: "We would encourage all residents to use their drives – if they have them – and to park in a safe, legal and responsible manner."
