I KNEW you wouldn’t let me down.

Last week I wrote about the bungalow in Appleton that Beatle George Harrison bought for his parents. It was here that Harrison composed White Album classic While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

I’d heard stories that the other members of the Fab Four had also visited the property, on Old Pewterspear Lane, and was looking for confirmation.

Nobody has been able to shed any light specifically on that (if you do have information, please let me know).

However, I had a couple of interesting pieces of feedback.

Warrington Guardian website reader Megamike56 had a personal encounter with George, the Quiet Beatle, back in the 1960s.

Mike said: “When I was a child, about 10 years old, I met George Harrison at his parents’ house.

“My uncle used to do his mum and dad’s garden.

“One day I went along with him and on this particular day George was there visiting.

“All I can really remember was that he was a really nice guy and very down-to-earth, quite normal, not like some of the wannabes of today.”

Thanks for sharing, Mike. I’m sure George would have taken an interest in your uncle’s gardening work – he was known to be a keen gardener himself. He oversaw the gardens at his home, the Friar Park estate in Henley-on-Thames and was often a visitor to the Chelsea Flower Show.

After last week’s column I also received a message from a reader who signed himself ‘brianjwouten’.

He said: “The Beatles played at the old Towers Labour Club in Lodge Lane, now the site of Towers Court.

“They were supported by a local group. I think it was Chris and the Diamonds. I can’t remember the date, but it would have been late 1962 or early 1963.

“I remember it because, try as I might, I could not get a ticket. I think the price was 3/6d.”

What’s fascinating about this piece of information is that it could rewrite Beatle history. The official line is that the band only ever played in Warrington once – at the Bell Hall, Orford, in 1962.

Does anybody else recall the gig at Lodge Lane? Can we trace Chris and the Diamonds? Do they recall the gig?

I was unaware of the Tower Labour Club at Bewsey prior to this. Apparently, Warrington Museum has a film called ‘Mods and Rockers 1960s’ on its website.

This has a brief mention of the Tower Labour Club in it, as well as a reference to the Beatles playing in the town, although I’m not sure if this is a reference to the Bell Hall gig instead.

Please get in touch and let’s see if we can record this historic event for posterity.
