EFFORTS to make this year's Whitley 10k the best one to date are progressing as the event edges closer.

Organisers have been working tirelessly behind the scenes in recent months ahead of the race, which will see runners make their way through Cheshire's country lanes, on April 23.

A 'fun run' is also due to take place shortly after.

Last year's event saw one of the biggest ever turnouts, with almost 500 residents taking part.

But race co-ordinator Peter Clayton is confident of exceeding that figure next month.

He said: "As ever, we are happy to receive registrations from all levels of runners from the very best, the very experienced and those entering their first 10k.

"The numbers on the 'fun run' have fallen a little in recent years so we have been looking to work with schools to see these numbers grow.

"The Whitley 10k is one of a string of events through the year organised by Whitley Village Hall's management committee – it is an important fundraiser for our community, with all profits going back into the community.

"It is a lot of hard work made easier by having so many hands to help and lots of smiling helpful faces around on the day.

"We have a six-person 10k committee that starts planning in the autumn, with monthly meetings taking place through to the race.

"We are all trying to learn the ropes from the 'master' of the 10k, Clifford Straw, who has been the driving force for many years.

"There is much to do but there is a great satisfaction in providing a good, safe race for those in the north Cheshire area and beyond.

"Feedback from those taking part is that this is one of the best road races of its type in a fantastic setting, winding through the car-free country lanes."

Prizes for first, second and third-placed men, women and veterans will be handed out, as well as a medal for every finisher.

The start and finish points of the race are adjacent to Whitley Village Hall, on Village Lane.
