PLANS to build nine new homes close to a road used to drop children off at Culcheth High School have been turned down by councillors.

Members of the council's development management committee, meeting on Wednesday night in the Town Hall, threw out the Evoke Homes scheme for land off Culcheth Hall Drive.

Cllr Joan Grime (LAB – Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft) said parking along the road was considerable at peak times, and the road was used heavily by parents during school pick up and drop off times. She stated that the highways issues were a serious consideration, and that the area could not cope with the increased vehicle movement the properties would bring.

Residents turned out in force to put their case against the proposals, arguing that little to nothing had changed since the Council rejected earlier plans and an appeal upheld that verdict.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Matt Smith said: "I am pleased to see the committee seriously considering the arguments made by residents and councillors, and deciding to reject the officer recommendation in this case.

"The result is a victory for common sense and democracy.

"I hope the developer uses this opportunity to fully reconsider his plans before coming back with a more reasonable proposal in keeping with the location."

Culcheth resident Chris Vobe, vice chairman of Warrington North Labour Party, praised the efforts of residents who worked with councillors on the campaign.

He added: "Here in Warrington North, the Labour Party has worked with local residents to put forward a compelling case against this excessive and unsustainable development.

"We are delighted to have delivered a victory for the local community and commend those residents on Culcheth Hall Drive and Withington Avenue who have led the fight, and ultimately won the day."
