THE RSPCA has been named as the Warrington Guardian’s charity of the month as we recognise the unsung heroes in our town.

This week our chief reporter Lauren Hirst has discovered what life is like for volunteers at the animal charity.

LOCKED in a rabbit hutch during the first months of his life it was a miracle that this adorable kitten survived.

But now the eight-month-old has a new lease of life after moving to a loving home with the help and support of the RSPCA Warrington, Halton and St Helens branch.

Gary was taken into the care of the animal rescue charity, which has a base on Slutchers Lane, following weeks of neglect.

In November he found his ‘forever home’ with couple Jennifer Madden, 29, and Karl Chapman, 30, in Stockport.

Graphic designer Jennifer said: “I knew as soon as we saw him that he was the one.
“I just fell in love.

“It’s heartbreaking to hear about what happened to him. He had cat flu and could have died.

“He is still a carrier which is why the RSPCA asked for him to be a house kitten.”

Jennifer is no stranger to looking after pets after caring for gerbils, mice and cats.

The 26-year-old has urged anyone considering taking on the responsibility of a rescue animal to think ‘long and hard’ before making the decision.

She said: “You need to be understanding when a pet comes from a rescue centre as they have been through a lot already in their lives.

“It’s a much bigger decision.”

The base on Slutchers Lane only admits animals via RSPCA inspectors due to reports of neglect and cruelty.

During an animal’s stay staff and volunteers spend months treating their injuries and rehabilitating the pets.

Once an animal is ready for adoption they are advertised and available for visiting by appointment only.

All animals will be neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and up to date with flea and worming treatments prior to adoption.

A donation to the charity is also required.
