FIANCÉE Terri Matthews was left wiping away her tears after her partner of seven years popped the question in the same spot where their love story began.

Mick McGunigle knew 28-year-old Terri was the love of his life after they first set eyes on each other at Warrington Bank Quay station on January 8, 2010.

Skelmersdale Council worker Mick had hoped to propose on the couple's anniversary but it has been a difficult few months for the couple.

He said: "When it came to our seven-year anniversary Terri was not well.

"She had been in intensive care and she nearly passed away after having our last baby.

"She had to be revived twice. We went through a hell of an ordeal.

"I knew I had to do something special.

"I just asked Virgin Trains if they could announce it on the speakers but they said they would like to help.

"It has been unbelievable what they have organised."

The couple, who now live in Skelmersdale, first met on platform two while they were both travelling down south to see their families.

Mick was making a journey to London while Terri was travelling to Birmingham.

He said: "I was looking across the platform thinking she's alright but I didn't have a way to break the ice and get her attention.

"But as a train flew passed us snow fell off and hit her in the face.

"I couldn't help but laugh at first.

"But then I went over like a gentleman and asked her if she was ok.

"We were chatting on the train and the rest is history."

After hearing Mick’s story, Virgin Trains wanted to help create a memorable engagement for the couple.

The team arranged for a busker to compose a song about their lives and perform it on the same platform where the couple met, before Mick got down on one knee on Valentine's Day.

To celebrate their engagement Virgin Trains surprised Mick and Terri with a first class journey to London and afternoon tea at Harrods.

And The Diamond Store helped Mick find the perfect ring for the special occasion, generously donating a rose gold diamond engagement band to the happy couple.

"I had no idea. I am in complete shock," said Terri.

"When we stopped at the buskers I started to wonder why.

“Normally we just throw money in and walk on.

"Then the song started to ring true for me.

"My heart started racing. It was a moment I will never forget.

"We have spoken about getting engaged but now it's finally happened.

"I thought he would be someone who just throws the ring at me – he's got a lot to live up to now."

Despite the meticulous planning, Mick was able to keep his nerves under control.

He said: "A few people knew about the engagement but not many.

"I had to ask her dad's permission.

"I was more scared doing that than actually getting down on one knee.

"I have put myself under immense pressure for the wedding plans now."
