OPPOSITION to the proposed freight terminal development at Parkside continues to grow with Warrington North MP Helen Jones voicing her concerns.

Mrs Jones has joined Burtonwood and Winwick councillors Cathy Mitchell and Terry O’Neill in strongly opposing the plans.

She said: “Such a proposal would be bad for Warrington and I will oppose it as I did the last time this idea arose.

“Any development of the site could cause significant traffic problems in Winwick and people should make sure they register their views through the consultation process which is currently under way.”

While the future of the former colliery remains uncertain, it was previously reported in the Guardian that bosses at Parkside Regeneration, which is the joint venture company owned by St Helens Council and developer Langtree, say the plans would replace the 2,000 jobs lost when the site closed in 1992.

But Cllr Cathy Mitchell (Burtonwood and Winwick – LAB) has also spoken out against the plan.

She said: ““If the proposals go through lots of green belt around Parkside and Winwick will be lost.

“Terry and I oppose any development on Parkside which would make the traffic problems in Winwick worse.”

There is still time to have your say on a consultation on the St Helens Local Plan.
