INDIVIDUALS who have excelled in rugby league across the town have been honoured at the third Warrington Man of Steel Awards.

Around 300 people made their way to the Halliwell Jones Stadium for the event, which was hosted by BBC Radio 5 Live presenter George Riley, on November 25.

They were joined by Warrington Wolves stars past and present, along with Tony Smith and Stuart Pearce, who provided encouraging words for the stars of the future.

Guests were also entertained by a choir from Sir Thomas Boteler High School.

Each of the seven amateur clubs involved were asked to nominate their own Man of Steel, from the under 12s to under 18s, of which the top three at each age group were shortlisted to attend on Friday.

Other prizes included a Touch Rugby League Award, Masters Award and High School Award.

Each amateur club also selected their own 'community hero' – an individual who has gone 'above and beyond' for their team.

The evening came to a close with the Heart and Sole of Rugby League Awards, dedicated to those who have made their mark and left their legacy on the sport.

Each of the Heart and Sole winners will have their own footprint displayed next to the Wire2Wolves Heritage Timeline in the South Stand at the stadium.

Council leader Cllr Terry O'Neill, who is chairman of the Warrington and Cheshire Rugby League Management Board, said: "It is fantastic to be able to recognise our young players for their achievements, while at the same time we can recognise those who have made their mark on rugby league in Warrington.

"The management board has been the driving force behind this event and to see everyone together in one room is the vision we had.

"Now let’s get more people playing more rugby league more often."

The Man of Steel winners were Charlie Groarke, Billy Cannon, Max Evans, Callum Turner, Kieran Moore and Casey Brown, while Peter Kearney won the Touch Rugby League Award.

Jamie Barnett, Alan Frith, Ian Boden, Andy Stephens, Ian Mercer, Darren McLoughlin and Nikki Whalley were announced as community heroes.

Pamela Caley, Mike Cooper and Warren Whalley were crowned the Heart and Sole of Rugby League Award Winners.
