HELP put the brakes on car crime in Warrington by following some top tips on how to avoid falling victim to opportunistic thieves.

While Christmas is a time to celebrate and have fun, for some it can provide opportunity to take advantage of those who are vulnerable.

To help detect and deter crime, Cheshire Police have joined forces with the Warrington Guardian to broadcast some vital advice to make sure residents enjoy a safe festive season this year.

As December is notoriously one of the busiest shopping times of the year, it is no surprise that thieves are often out in force targeting shoppers when they least expect it.

Alison Gabbott, crime reduction advisor at the force, has provided advice about what people can do to protect themselves from criminals by taking the 'common-sense approach' while shopping.

She said: "Make sure presents are put out of sight if the need to be stored in the car and if stores have click and collect facilities go and collect the presents later.

"Once you get home you might want to hide your presents from prying eyes.

"If they are stored in your car on the drive they are potentially vulnerable so think about the alternatives.

"Perhaps ask a neighbour to store them for you."

If shoppers need to store presents in the car before heading back to the shops, Alison has urged drivers to park in secure, police accredited car parks, which are advertised online.

With temperatures continuing to plummet, thieves often target residential areas to catch those who have left their cars to defrost unattended.

She added: "Obviously the weather is getting colder and it is easy in the morning to start your car and wait in the house while it defrosts and finish other jobs.

"But if you're distracted think about who might be out there looking at your car and how easy it is for someone to drive away while you are back in the house."
