BRITAIN's sixth in line to the throne Prince Andrew praised the 'inspired thinking' of the team behind the construction of University Technical College Warrington.

The Duke of York visited the specialist school off Dallam Lane near to the town centre today, Monday, to officially open the new building in the Stadium Quarter.

Shortly before unveiling the new plaque, he said: "By going through a UTC you are going to give your child a really good start in some of the jobs which are currently – and more so in the future – going to be available not only in the local area but more broadly across the country.

"Coming to a UTC will have a significant benefit to young people."
Prince Andrew was given a tour of the new facilities by principal Lee Barber who praised the work of the team of staff at the UTC.

He added: "Creating what I feel is an outstanding building and educational institution has required perseverance, dedication from a whole team of people and a lot of committed stakeholders.

"While at times there have been challenges along the way which have tested our character and resolve we are really proud to be here amongst great people and great facilities."

Almost 200 students aged 14 to 18 started at the UTC this September, which cost £10million to build and is one of the tallest structures in the town

The UTC, which is a school funded by the Government and sponsored by a number of companies and Manchester Metropolitan University, focuses on science, technology, engineering and maths subjects.

A million pounds’ worth of engineering equipment and £500,000 of IT resources are just some of the facilities available to pupils in the Dallam Lane building, including 3D printers, robotics and aeronautical kit.
