THE father of a man who suffered life-changing injuries when he was knocked down in Taiwan faces a desperate struggle to find the funds to fly his son home.

Dad-of-two Jack Kelly, who grew up in Burtonwood, is calling on the public's help to bring his 31-year-old son John home following the devastating crash.

Teacher John was hit by a car on October 1 in the city of Taichung where he has been living for the past three years.

The consequences of the collision were life-threatening and he remains in a coma in intensive care.

"His right leg, collarbone and upper arms were shattered," said Jack, 60.

"He had a broken neck, spinal injuries and part of his skull has been removed to allow for the swelling on his brain.

"The bones will heal in time and they have been giving him pain medication to stop his heart rate spiking but there has been no response at all from John.

"They say it might be six months, a year or longer or maybe he will never come out of the coma."

Jack lived in Burtonwood until he joined the British Army in 1976 – four months before his 20th birthday.

Jack along with his wife Shanon Kelly welcomed John into the world in April 1985 while he was stationed at BMH Hannover in Germany.

The family later moved to Canada where they welcomed a second son Jacob, now 25.

They are now desperate to raise the $45,000 to fly John back to Canada.

"John has not spoken since being hit and he has no recognition but his eyes are open," said Jack.

"The doctors have stated that John needs to be brought back to Canada as soon as possible.

"His mum is over there now and the doctors state they do not want her to leave as they need a family member to be there.

"Whatever monies we have or had are being depleted rapidly and now they also state that soon we will have to pay upwards of $100 a day for his care.

"I am just praying that we can bring John home to Canada.

“The thought of leaving him there is killing his mother and I."
