A GROUP of Great Sankey friends look set for greatness after teaming up to create their own social media app.

Jack McClory, a 22-year-old lifeguard at Great Sankey Leisure Centre, has been working on VeeU with friends Mike Clare, Tom Denton and Bill Noble.

He explained the app is similar to Tinder except instead of people, users vote on images and videos.

The more you vote on other people’s pictures, the more views you rack up for your own, and Jack said the app is designed for people who want a wider audience for their posts.

“No other social network has done this before,” he said.

“The start is the hardest part. The app wasn’t inspired by Tinder but we were glad when it came along because it made it easier to explain.”

The team have been working on VeeU since 2012 but it only launched on app stores at the end of June.

There have been setbacks along the way, including the collapse of a software company the team was working with which meant they had to start again from scratch.

But Jack said the best part of the project is working with his friends and he has known Mike and Tom since they played football together as children.

He said the team spend 20 hours a week working on the app outside of work and are always texting each other with new ideas.

“We have known each other for too long to hold back with ideas – you are not afraid to challenge people when you’re working with friends,” he added.

“We are all comfortable with each other, that’s the best thing about it. Working with your mates every day is fantastic.

“It’s a nice blend of people – Bill’s got experience and sometimes he brings us back down to earth.

“Everyone thinks this might be the next big thing, hopefully it will take off. Even if we don’t get that many users, it will be good to have that small success behind you. It’s good experience.”
