CHESHIRE Police has issued advice for students to help stay safe as the new term gets under way.

As they settle into their new homes, officers at the force are reminding students to give some thought to their personal safety and their new neighbours.

Partnership inspector Richard Spedding said it was important that students also familiarise themselves with their surroundings.

He added: "When out socialising all students need to drink responsibly and think about their personal safety.

"Drinking excessively can affect your judgement, meaning that you are more likely to do things you wouldn’t normally do, and can also put you at risk of injury or harm.

“When going out it’s also important that students plan their journey home and look after their friends, by doing so they can ensure that everyone gets home safely at the end of the night.”

Throughout Fresher’s Week there will an increased number of officers on patrol in all our university towns and cities. Officers will also be attending the Fresher’s Fairs to introduce themselves to the students and offer crime reduction advice.

Students are encouraged to look out for the #Freshers2016 and #StreetSafe hashtags for the latest personal safety and crime reduction advice.
