PUPILS at Sacred Heart Primary School have been dancing up a storm on the playground with a new morning routine.

Years five and six performed an Uptown Funk dance routine for their delighted parents on Friday morning and head teacher Colleen Everett said the early morning workouts have had a surprising effect on pupils.

“It’s had a massive impact on our attendance and children getting to school on time – they don’t want to be late for the dance,” she said.

“They absolutely love it and the parents do too – there are lots and lots of smiles before school. It was basically to increase health opportunities.

“The year five and six children teach the routine to years three and four. And all the little toddlers watch at the gates – we’re hoping to get them to join in too at some point.”

Year five teacher Danielle Walker, who taught dance before moving to Sacred Heart, has been choreographing the routines and demonstrates them to the children with year six teacher Jane Laverack.

“The pupils just take it in their stride,” added Colleen.
