OLD Liverpool Road is currently closed to traffic after a lorry carrying rubbish flipped over.
The accident has closed the road at the Thewlis Street junction with the Pink Eye roundabout.
It is understood the lorry was carrying rubbish to Arpley Landfill.
A crane is at the scene helping with the clean-up operation.
Police officers were still at the scene at 3pm as the operation to clear up the area and make the road safe continued.
Stunned residents could be seen capturing footage on their phones.
Saxon Park resident Harish Vishran said he ‘could not believe’ what he saw and highlighted concerns over lorries passing the area to get to the tip.
He added: “I thought someone was under it when I drove past.
“It could have squashed someone or a car.
“I have been here for eight years and in that time the volume of lorries passing has increased.
“It is a very busy road.”
As well as the police, Howley Quay Motors and Warrington Borough Council also attended the scene.
At 4.30pm the council confirmed the lorry had been removed and the road reopened.
More to follow.
